NRL Transfer Centre: Arthur leaving Eels mid-season, ex-Maroon on the move, Warriors prodigal son returning (2023)

Eels halfback Jakob Arthur is leaving his father’s side to make a mid-season switch to Manly.

The young playmaker, who was a member of last year’s Grand Final team, has struggled for game time this season, getting a run a fortnight ago when Mitchell Moses was suspended.

After 20 games over three seasons, he will join the Sea Eagles to give them depth in the halves with lingering questions over Josh Schuster‘s fitness and with Daly Cherry-Evans involved in Queensland Origin duties.

He could make his debut this Sunday in the road trip to Newcastle.

“Jake adds depth to our squad, particularly in the halves. We feel he also has got the ability to be a ball playing forward with his size and defensive capabilities,” said coach Anthony Seibold, who was a Melbourne Storm assistant alongside Brad Arthur a decade-plus ago.

“This is an opportunity for Jake to experience different coaches, different club environment, and he adds to the depth of our program, particularly with 10 players currently unavailable out of our top 30 for this weekend’s game.”

Moses has officially sealed his Eels deal which was agreed upon several weeks ago, taking him through until the end of 2028. Parra have also re-signed young forward J’maine Hopgood until the end of 2025.

Parramatta, meanwhile, have named former Maroons forward JoeOfahengauefor Friday’s game against the North Queensland Cowboys after he completed a switch from the Wests Tigers on Tuesday.

A year on from his shock decision to take a hiatus from the NRL, Chanel Harris-Tavita has confirmed he will return to the Warriors next season.

Harris-Tavita signed a two-year contract with the New Zealand club on Monday.

The 24-year-old’s last game came in Samoa’s World Cup final loss last year before he took a break from the NRL.

Harris-Tavita told AAP last year he felt “guilty” for not wanting to continue his pursuit of an NRL career after opting to spend the previous six months travelling.

His return to the Warriors will give coach Andrew Webster a bevvy of playmaking options, with Luke Metcalf and Te Maire Martin also on the books. Veteran playmaker Shaun Johnson has yet to confirm whether he will remain with the club in 2024.
