My MDX has 208,500 miles and the transmission is acting up. I realize I am one of the lucky ones as I have never had any problems with it until now. When driving, sometimes it feels like the break is on, the tach revs up then it shifts to the right gear. When on the freeway on Friday, going about 45-50 mph, there was a big lurch, like I hit the breaks but I didn't. Got off freeway and to a light, when almost stopped, the car shifted gears roughly. step on the gas and it again felt like something was holding the car back.
Decided it was too risky to try to drive home and was close to the dealer where I bought it new and have had it serviced for 20 years. They topped off the transmission fluid and said the car still wasn't shifting right. They said the computer did not show any error codes so I could continue to drive it. Um, no thanks. I don't need the drama of being stuck on the side of the road waiting for hours for a tow truck in my near future.
Dealer said it is most likely the transmission (like I suggested it was) and they could only replace my transmission with a used one that most likely will have around 100K miles on it. He "guessed" it would run me about $10,000! GULP. He said Acura does not allow any Acura dealer to open and repair transmissions. Since mine is so old, they don't make new transmissions for it. Best they could do is a used one. They also reminded me that the repair costs most likely exceed the value of my SUV.
I really don't want new(er) car payments. Looking online, it seems it will cost me at least 20K for a newer MDX with 100K miles. Knowing I am very lucky I got 208K miles out of my transmission, not sure I should spend 20K on an MDX with that many miles, even if it is newer than mine. With the transmission reputation of the MDX that seems pretty risky. Are there years of manufacture they had "good" transmissions?
My questions are: Does anyone know of a good transmission repair place in Seattle, Burien, Tukwila, Renton areas of Washington State?
Is it better to take a chance on finding an MDX in a junk yard and use that transmission or is it better to find someone to rebuild mine? Or are there other options?
I've seen mention under transmission threads on this site, about a 3 yr warranty on transmission fixes or replacement. Who gives a warranty on transmission repairs? I would like to have a warranty on getting mine fixed.
I still like my '02. It is starting to showing wear on the front seats. I've done the timing belt once. New motor mounts, regular oil changes and other regular maintenance recommended. It's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. I upgraded the stereo to include backup camera and blue tooth. I do have a small oil leak on the back wall of the engine. It's so small I only need to add oil about every 3-4 months. I do check it often.
I have no idea what is involved in fixing or replacing the tranny. Is there other work that would be smart to have done at the same time while the transmission is removed?
Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.
Thanks so much,

My 2001 Acura MDX Touring required a new transmission at 269,000 miles. With years of proper maintenance, and the replacement of several typical high-mileage components, the vehicle was performing very well and worthy of the transmission costs.
I selected a fully rebuilt and updated transmission from Moveras, with a 4-year, 75,000 mile warranty.
30,000 miles and the transmission has performed very well. The upgrades included all the first generation improvements through 2006, and the new transmission has been a noted overall improvement over the original.

A fully rebuilt and updated transmission, from Moveras, worked great for my 2001 Acura MDX Touring, at 269,000 miles
Withbetter overall performance and a 4-year/75,000 mile warranty, if the vehicle is otherwise well-maintained and mechanically sound, it is well worth the cost.
In September 2019, the transmission was $2,500.00 online and professional installation was $1,500.00, for a grand total of $4,000.00.
Considering the cost of replacement vehicles, if the vehicle is otherwise sound, I would do it again.
